Man tries to bring loaded revolver into Big Island state building

Advertiser Staff

Police on the Big Island arrested and charged a 60-year-old man with a felony weapons offense for attempting to enter the state building with a bag containing a loaded revolver on Tuesday.

At approximately 10 a.m., South Hilo Patrol Officers responded to a report that security screeners at the state building had observed what appeared to be the outline of a handgun while X-raying a man's bag. The screener informed a deputy sheriff, who detained the man.

Police recovered a loaded Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver and 84 loose .38 caliber rounds from the bag.

At 5 p.m., after consulting with the prosecutor's office, Detectives charged John G. S. H. Kanekoa of Keaau with Place to Keep Pistol or Revolver, a class B felony. Bail was set at $2,000.

Kanekoa was released on bail Tuesday night.
