Maui's Haleakala National Park is eliminating its lottery system and will accept telephone reservations for wilderness cabin rentals on a first-come basis starting in September.

Reservations can be made from 1–3 p.m. (Hawai'i time), seven days a week, by calling 808-572-4400. All reservations require a credit card, and the is a cancellation fee for all reservations. Early reservations may be made three months in advance of the calling date.

The park is working with a local vendor to develop an online cabin reservation system. Converting to a credit card system, is the first step of the transition, said Dominic Cardea, the park's public information officer.
