Kristopher Kalani, 21, was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree assault yesterday in the third "one-punch" assault case heard in Circuit Court this month.

Kalani was originally charged with manslaughter in the death of Alexander Saballa, 18, in Nanakuli in 2006.

"The defendant did take responsibility," Deputy Prosecutor Sherri Chun said.

Kalani was accused of striking Saballa with a pipe wrench, causing severe head injuries that led to his death four months later.

Kalani "admitted hitting the victim once but he denied using a weapon," Chun said.

Circuit Judge Richard Perkins sentenced Kalani to a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Earlier this week, 25-year-old Ryan Carrillo was sentenced to a year in prison and five years of probation for permanently disabling victim Jesse Greenwood with a single punch to the head last year in Waikiki.

Earlier this month, a Circuit Court jury found Less Schnabel Jr., 23, guilty of manslaughter after he fatally punched tourist Christopher Reuther, 34, once in the head last year in a Nanakuli beach parking lot. Schnabel is awaiting sentencing in that case.
