Auditions for Paliku's 'Miss Saigon' next week

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser staff writer

Auditions for Paliku Theatre's fall production of "Miss Saigon" will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at the Windward Community College theater.

Ron Bright will direct the Tony Award-winning musical, with performances beginning Oct. 3.

Principal and ensemble roles are available for Asian and Asian-American singers, ages 16 to 35, and non-Asian adult roles for the parts of Ellen, Chris and John, and assorted military personnel.

There also is a role for one child, male or female, of Asian-American descent, to portray Tan, the child of the female lead, Kim. The tryouts for the child role will be at 6 p.m. on each night, preceding the adult talent call.

No roles are pre-cast.

Adult auditioners should prepare a contemporary pop or Broadway song that shows a high range in belt/chest voice. Performers may sing a tune from "Miss Saigon," but must bring their own sheet music for other selections. An accompanist will be provided, and no one will be allowed to audition a cappella or to tracks on tape or CD.

For movement auditions, women should bring tights, leotards and character shoes with heels or flat jazz shoes; men should wear dance or comfortable attire for movement. Sneakers or jazz shoes are acceptable.

Men with aerial acrobatic skills are also needed.

The "Miss Saigon" performance commitment is for five weekends ending no later than Nov. 2.

Rehearsals are typically 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, with more weekends scheduled closer to opening night.

Ticket sales begin Aug. 1.

Paliku Theatre is located on the Windward Community College campus, at the top of Kea'ahala Road, mauka of Kahekili Highway, in Kane'ohe.
