Lanikai, Hawaiian canoe clubs top contenders in state championship

Lanikai from O'ahu and Hawaiian from Maui will be the top contenders for the overall team title at next week's Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association State Championship Regatta.

Lanikai will bring a regatta-high 37 crews to the state championships. Hawaiian will have 33 crews.

The state championship regatta is scheduled for Aug. 2 at Ke'ehi Lagoon. The lane assignments for the regatta were revealed today.

Hawaiian is the seven-time defending state champion; Lanikai has finished runner-up the last two years.

Other teams contending for the overall title are Kailua, Hui Nalu and Outrigger.

The state regatta will feature more than 2,000 paddlers representing 66 clubs from around the state.
