Damien miracle witness to speak

Dr. Walter Y.M. Chang, who provided medical testimony about the miraculous healing on behalf of the sainthood of Blessed Damien of Moloka'i, will speak at St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church at 9:15 a.m. Aug. 10.

Chang's testimony in the case of cancer patient Audrey Toguchi of 'Aiea helped advance the sainthood cause for Damien, who is on his way to becoming Hawai'i's first saint. Chang's talk is titled "Today Miracles Do Happen." The church is at 720 N. King St.

FORGIVENESS DAY FESTIVAL ON AUG. 3

"Forgiving the Unforgivable" is the topic of the upcoming Festival of Forgiveness, to be held 1-5 p.m. Aug. 3 at the East-West Center.

Speakers at the free conference, which is part of the Sixth Annual Hawaii International Forgiveness Day, include Gerald Jampolsky, Diane Cirincione, "My Brooklyn Hamlet" actress and performer Brenda Adelman, and a phone interview with Holocaust survivor Henri Landwirth.

CONCERT AUG. 9 TO CELEBRATE COPE

The life of Blessed Marianne Cope, who brought the Sisters of St. Francis to Hawai'i 125 years ago, will be celebrated at a free Royal Hawaiian Band concert 5:30 p.m. Aug. 9 at Kapolei Hale.

The event, which will be held on the 90th anniversary of Cope's death, includes "The Ode to St. Anne," a piece that the Royal Hawaiian Band premiered in 1917, presented to Mother Marianne and her patroness, St. Anne. It was written by Capt. Henry Berger, who also wrote "The Mother Marianne Hymn."

Blessed Marianne, who is on the path to sainthood, died Aug. 9, 1918, at age 80 after spending 30 years ministering to Hansen's disease patients at Kalaupapa.

FAMILIES INVITED TO 2-DAY RETREAT

A family retreat program will be held Aug. 30-31 at the Mystical Rose Oratory.

It's co-sponsored by the Diocese of Honolulu's Office of Religious Education and the Marianist Center of Hawaii.

Weekend events include peer discussions, prayer, family dialogue and outdoor recreation. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 30 and 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 31. Attendance on both days is required.

Cost: $75 for a family of four ($10 per additional child).

Scrub Bucket Gospel Ministries is offering a morning workshop for men and women based on the book "May I Have This Dance?" by Joyce Rupp.
