Restaurant opens at Market City

Banana Leaf Italian Bistro, a 1,580-square-foot restaurant, said it has opened in the Market City Shopping Center, bringing the center to 100 percent occupancy.

The 60-seat eatery owned by Ken and City Wong and Sam and Fiona Lo offers casual Italian meals. Wong owns other restaurants, including five Sumo Ramen locations on O'ahu.


SECOND-QUARTER RESULTS ANALYZED

Bank of Hawaii Corp. is scheduled to release its second-quarter results today and discuss the financial performance at an 8 a.m. conference call with investors and analysts. People may listen to the call through a link on the investor relations portion of the bank's Web site.

Also reporting results this week is Boyd Gaming Corp., the company whose Downtown Las Vegas casinos are popular with Hawai'i residents. On Friday, it will have its earnings-release conference call at 6 a.m. Hawai'i time. The call also will be available through the www.boydgaming.com site.

Hawaiian Telcom said it will release its second-quarter results on Aug. 14 and hold a call for investors that same day at 9 a.m. The company's earnings call will be the first with several new managers who are trying to turn it around.


CONFERENCE TO DISCUSS FOOD SECURITY

The "Creating Sustainable Food Systems Conference" is scheduled this week at the KEY Projects Multi-Purpose Center on Waihe'e Road in Kane'ohe. It will explore creation of sustainable food systems in Hawai'i on Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Among the speakers will be Mark Winne author of "Closing the Food Gap," and Keith Rollman, a member of the Hawai'i 2025 Sustainability Task Force.

The conference is sponsored by the Laulima Eco-friendly Alliance of Farms and costs $50. More information is available by calling 389-1819.


ISLES RATE BEST FOR FAMILY VACATIONS

Hawai'i has been named the top spot for "perfect" family vacation destinations by readers of Virtuoso Life, a magazine targeting upscale travelers.

The magazine's readers also voted Hawai'i the No. 2 Best Island Escape. The Greek Isles were voted No. 1 in the category.


LAHAINA GRILL RENOVATES BUILDING

The Lahaina Grill said it has renovated its building with a solar hot water system, a photovoltaic electric system, a waste heat recovering system and other improvements to make the restaurant and other portions of the building more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

Other work included installation of air-conditioner timers, high-efficiency dishwashers and exhaust fans and energy efficient light fixtures.


SEMINAR ON COMPUTER FORENSICS

SuperGeeks, a computer service firm, said it will offer a free seminar on computer forensics between noon and 1 p.m. Friday at the Richards St. YWCA. The seminar will explore forensic techniques used to analyze computer systems, recovering of data when systems fail, analyzing systems after a break-in and how to gather evidence against an employee that an organization wishes to fire.
