HAWAI'I KAI — A fisherman died today after being swept off a ledge and pounded by waves at a site east of China Wall in Portlock.

Police said the man, 55, died at Straub Clinic & Hospital.

The incident occurred at 11 Hanapepe Place at 11:20 a.m., according to police who have classified the case as an unattended death. An autopsy will determine cause and manner of death. The man's name is not being released until his identity is confirmed.

A male fishing companion told police the victim was knocked down by a large wave while he was setting up fishing gear, police said. Another wave knocked him off the ledge and a third wave pounded him against the rocks while he was in the water, police said.

Surfers in the area responded to the fishing companion's call for help and brought the unconscious victim to the ledge, where he received medical attention from Ocean Safety & Lifeguard Services personnel before being taken to the hospital.
