WAILUKU, Maui — A Maui Fire Department helicopter today airlifted an injured hiker from 'Iao Valley.

The 20-year-old woman slipped and hit her head while hiking with a group of friends about a mile from the visitor center at 'Iao Valley State Park, said Battalion Chief Jeff Shaffer. One of her companions hiked out to the visitor area to summon help at 11:47 a.m.

Fire Department rescue crews placed the woman, who complained of dizziness, on a gurney so that she could be flown to a landing zone set up in the park's parking lot, Shaffer said.

An ambulance transported her to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
