Rowing: Brown wins second straight NCAA women's title

GOLD RIVER, Calif. — Brown claimed its second consecutive NCAA women's rowing championship today at Lake Natoma while Yale came from behind to win the Eights grand final for a second straight year.

Yale completed the 2,000-meter course at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center in 6 minutes, 34.05 seconds, more than a second faster than Brown, which finished third.

Stanford, an at-large selection, led for most of the race but finished second in 6:34.95 after Yale took the lead with about 50 meters left.

Brown also finished third in the Fours but won in the Second Eights to score an overall victory, its sixth, with 67 points. Washington was second with 59, followed by California with 53.

Western Washington took the Division II team title for the fourth year in a row after beating its closest competitor in the Eights grand final by more than 13 seconds.

The Vikings finished the race in 6:53.20. UC San Diego was second with 7:06.68, followed by Dowling with 7:10.19.
