University of Hawai'i's Amber Kaufman tied for sixth and teammate Emily Sheppard placed ninth in the high jump yesterday at the NCAA West Regional Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Matador Track Complex in Northridge, Calif.

Kaufman, who will likely earn a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships because of her school-record 6 feet-, 1/2-inch jump at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, cleared the first two heights (5-7 1/4 and 5-9 1/4) yesterday before settling into sixth. Sheppard also cleared 5-7 1/4. Sharon Day of Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo won with 6-1 1/2.

UH senior Meghan Weaver heaved the shot 51-2 1/4 to finish sixth, her best showing in four regional appearances. A top-five finish would have earned her an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships. Jessica Pressley of Arizona State won with 57-1.

Hawai'i's Annett Wichmann finished ninth in the javelin with a throw of 151-8. Rachel Yurkovich of Oregon won with 180-11. Wichmann has already qualified for the NCAAs in the heptathlon. The championships will be held June 11 to 14 in Des Moines, Iowa.

The top eight finishers in each event scored team points. During the two-day meet, the Rainbow Wahine totaled 7.5 points to finish 18th. Arizona State led the 26-team field with 114 points. Southern California was second with 78, followed by Oregon with 50.
