Baseball: David Ortiz expects to be in cast 2-3 weeks

Associated Press

BOSTON— David Ortiz expects to wear a cast on his left wrist for two to three weeks in hopes it will heal sufficiently to get him back in the Red Sox lineup soon.

Ortiz tore the sheath that surrounds his tendon while swinging Saturday night at Baltimore. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list today.

General manager Theo Epstein said that once the cast is removed, a key indicator of the healing process will be how much tenderness Ortiz feels. Epstein said follow-up MRIs will be done.

Ortiz said he was hurt on a normal swing and hadn't felt a problem in the wrist before then.

He leads the Red Sox with 13 homers and 43 RBIs.
