Architects Hawaii pledges to 1% pro bono program

Architects Hawaii has pledged to provide 1 percent of its billable hours annually to pro bono services as part of a national program to help communities.

The firm is already helping Salvation Army, with a new facility in Manoa, and is searching for other nonprofits to help.

"This is a true expression of our staff's philanthropic heart and a way to use our passion for architecture while contributing to community needs," said David Miller, president and CEO of Architects Hawaii.

The firm has 50 staff members participating in the program, and has pledged to donate about 1,000 hours annually.

The national pro bono program was launched in 2005 by Public Architecture, a nonprofit organization that advocates for better design of public spaces and amenities. About 300 design firms across the country have signed up for the 1 percent program.
