Likelike motorcycle crash sends rider to hospital

Advertiser Staff

A 20-year-old male motorcyclist was taken to The Queen's Medical Center late this morning in serious condition after he lost control of his bike on the Kane'ohe side of Wilson Tunnel, according to Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the the city's emergency services department.

The local resident was on a brand new Suzuki and traveling on Likelike Highway with another motorcyclist when he hit the makai guardrail about 100 yards from the tunnel, said Capt. Terry Seelig, spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department.

The biker was ejected 25 feet beyond the rail and about 25 feet down an embankment, Seelig said.

The crash was reported at about 11:30 this morning and when fire crews arrived, city emergency personnel were treating the victim, Seelig said.

Fire crews from the Kane'ohe station rigged a stretcher to bring the biker to the roadside where he was further treated and taken by ambulance to the hospital, he said.

Seelig said he didn't know if speed was a factor in the crash or the conditions of the road, but the biker was wearing a helmet and said he had owned the bike for only two days.
