Big Island woman indicted in death

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — A Big Island woman has been indicted in the death last year of a 97-year-old pedestrian who was struck by a van as he crossed Hawai'i Belt Road in Pepe'ekeo.

The indictment alleges Jennifer Crowl, also known as Jennifer Oshiro, caused the death by driving in a negligent manner on Sept. 30.

The indictment charges Crowl with second-degree negligent homicide and driving without a license. If convicted, she could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.

Police said 97-year-old Tadashi Yamashita, of Pepe'ekeo, was struck by a 2002 Mazda MPV van driven by a 23-year-old Hilo woman as Yamashita walked across the highway near Kulaimano Road.

Police said it appeared Yamashita was not in a crosswalk, and said they did not believe speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.

2 MAUI ACCIDENT VICTIMS IDENTIFIED

Police have identified two people who were killed Monday night on Maui in separate accidents.

At 6:05 p.m., 32-year-old William Rodriguez, of Kihei, was killed when he crashed his Honda motorcycle on Honoapi'ilani Highway, one-tenth of a mile from the pali tunnel. He was traveling east when he went off the right shoulder, lost control and hit a guardrail, police said. He was thrown from the motorcycle.

The second fatality occurred at 7:57 p.m. on Haleakala Crater Road. Police said Lin Robinson, of the United Kingdom, was in the rear seat of a car that hit a rock embankment. Robinson, 56, suffered fatal injuries. Three other people were in the car. The accident happened on Highway 378, near Aolewa Street in Kula.

The deaths were Maui's 10th and 11th traffic fatalities of 2008.
