Police seek SUV driver involved in fatal crash

Advertiser Staff

Police this morning are look for the driver of a light colored sports utility vehicle that was involved in a fatal pedestrian collision last night near the Jack in the Box restaurant on Dillingham Boulevard.

A 79-year-old Honolulu man was crossing the street from the mauka to the makai side about 9 p.m. when he was struck and knocked to the ground by the SUV which was headed west on Dillingham.

A 2001 Dodge Neon which was also heading west then ran over the man and dragged him approximately 30 feet before coming to a stop, police said.

They said the man who was driving the SUV stopped momentarily and then sped away from the scene. The SUV had paper license plates indicating it was brand new, police said.

The injured man was taken to The Queen's Medical Center with head and torso injuries and was pronounced dead at 12:51 a.m.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the incident call the Vehicular Homicide investigation unit at 529-3499.

The 28-year-old woman Honolulu woman driving the Neon was not injured, was not speeding and was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.

The fatality was the 18th on Oahu so far this year compared to 35 at this time last year.
