Pearlridge bank robbery suspect's trial Aug. 5

By Rod Ohira

A discarded hooded black pullover sweatshirt, tribal tattoo, an alert police officer and DNA evidence led to the arrest of a suspect last week and charges which cleared the final unresolved bank robbery case in Hawai'i this year.

William Allen Lowry was ordered held without bail yesterday until his trial Aug. 5 before U.S. Judge Michael Seabright for allegedly robbing American Security Bank's Pearlridge branch at 98-200 Pali Momi St. on Feb. 5.

A criminal complaint filed at federal court stated Lowry allegedly discarded a hooded sweatshirt while running through a parking lot shortly after the robbery. A security guard recovered the sweatshirt.

Investigators obtained a surveillance photo of the suspect at a Toys R Us store, which showed he had a tribal-type tattoo on his right bicep and ponytail. The surveillance videos were distributed to the Pearl City Crime Reduction Unit.

CRU Officer Douglas Lee spotted a man matching the description of the bank robbery suspect at Neal Blaisdell Park on Feb. 29 and stopped him, obtaining his identity and address in the process, the complaint said.

On April 28, HPD's DNA/Serology lab informed investigators it obtained a DNA sample from the sweatshirt. Lowry was arrested for questioning on May 23 and allegedly consented to a buccal swabbing for the purpose of confirming identification through DNA.

FBI agents arrested Lowry on a warrant Saturday and he was arraigned yesterday.

Suspects have been charged in all of O'ahu 10 bank robberies this year and also one of Kaua'i.
