La Pietra memorial service June 14 for Joseph Pynchon

Advertiser Staff

A memorial service for Joseph H. Pynchon, founding headmaster of La Pietra Hawai'i School for Girls, will be June 14 from 10 to 11 a.m., with a reception from 11 a.m. to noon at La Pietra.

Pynchon died Jan. 2 in Boise, Idaho. He moved there in 1991 after retiring from La Pietra, where he had been headmaster since its inception in 1964.

Pynchon helped the school expand from its original three classes (grades 7, 8 and 9) to Honolulu's only nondenominational college preparatory school for girls, with grades 6-12.

Before coming to La Pietra, Pynchon chaired the English department at 'Iolani School. He and his wife had moved to Honolulu from Winnetka, Ill.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Cheney; sons, David Lewis, Joseph Jr. and William; daughter, Anne Savage; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

La Pietra is at 2933 Poni Moi Road. Valet parking is available.

For information, call the school at 922-2744.
