Kaneohe, Hawaii — The Hawaii Council on Portuguese Heritage will present the Rainbow Heritage Workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at Camp Kokokahi in Kaneohe, 45-035 Kaneohe Bay Drive.

Organizers said the event presents a unique opportunity for Island youth and their families to explore their Portuguese heritage. Guest presenters will range from history, language and culinary experts to entertainer Frank DeLima. Advance registration is required.

Throughout the day, families will hear stories of their ancestors' voyages to Hawaii, which spanned halfway around the world from mainland Portugal and the Portuguese islands of Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde. They will learn the geography and history of their heritage with the help of lectures, displays and fun activities. They will see and hear examples of the art and music of the Portuguese, from the familiar shape of the braguinha — the grandfather of the ukulele — to the lamenting passion in a Fado singer.

Chartered in 1977 for the purpose of preserving and perpetuating the heritage and culture of the Portuguese in Hawaii, the Hawaii Council on Portuguese Heritage is an umbrella organization for Portuguese civic, cultural and business groups throughout the state of Hawaii.

Aslo participating in the event will be Portuguese language expert Herbert Carlos, Portuguese bakery owner Non DeMello, musician and linguist Sandra Tsukiyama de Oliveira, musician Sonny Silva, and art teacher Ginger Royal.

The schedule is as follows:

9 a.m.-noon — Portuguese history, immigration story, language and cuisine

Noon-12:30 p.m. — Lunch prepared by Non DeMello, owner of Agnes' Portuguese Bake Shop

12:30-3 p.m. — Frank DeLima followed by Portuguese art, music, dance and modern-day travel experiences
