Hilo man, 29, dies in apparent jump from ledge at waterfalls

Advertiser Staff

A 29-year-old Hilo man died today after he jumped from the top of Pe'epe'e Falls and landed on a rock outcropping about 80 feet below, police said.

Witnesses say the man, identified as Jensen Adam Stein, appeared to jump from the ledge near the top of the falls in the upper Pi'ihonua area of Hilo about 11:25 a.m., according to Hilo police.

Hawaii County Fire Department personnel used a rescue helicopter to recover his body, which was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about at 1:36 p.m.

It was the second time in two weeks that a man had died at the falls.

On May 27, a 27-year-old Puna man, Vincent E. Scerbo, died at the falls, also known as "Boiling Pots." Police said Scerbo drowned when he fell or jumped from above the waterfall.
