Coast Guard helps burning boat off Maui

Associated Press

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard is assisting six people aboard a wooden hull fishing vessel that caught fire 140 miles north of Maui.

A Coast Guard C-130 Hercules airplane dropped a dewatering pump and a VHF radio onto the 54-foot fishing vessel Lady Chul.

The vessel's crew put out the fire, but electrical damage made it difficult to operate the ship's dewatering pumps.

The Coast Guard cutter Ahi was traveling to assist the distressed crew members.

The Coast Guard says it is investigating the incident.
