The switch of sports seasons affected Erik Shoji, but he adapted and made the adjustment with grace and aplomb.

Shoji was a three-time Advertiser All-State first team selection in boys volleyball, helping Punahou win three state championships when that sport was played in the fall. In the spring, Erik played tennis and won two doubles state titles.

This year, both sports were played in the same season, but Shoji is no stranger to making adjustments and adapting on short notice. As a freshman and sophomore, he made the All-State volleyball team as a libero, displaying college-level abilities in the back row.

He switched to outside hitter as a junior, requiring him to add a new skill set such as hitting and blocking to his game. Shoji made it look easy, again winning All-State first team honors and helping the Buffanblu complete a third straight undefeated season and third consecutive state title run.

This past season, Shoji added setting to his duties and led a young Punahou team to yet another unbeaten regular season and a fourth straight state championship match.

He did this while also playing tennis in the same season, repeating with partner Alex Ching as ILH doubles champion.

Along with juggling sports, Erik juggled a schedule that included AP courses in calculus and environmental science and maintained a 3.72 grade point average. He will attend Stanford University in the fall, joining brother and Hall of Honor member Kawika on the Cardinal volleyball team.
