Waikiki drowning victim was Tokyo man, 40

Autopsy findings by the Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office today determined a 40-year-old male visitor from Japan drowned Saturday at Waikiki.

The man was identified as Akio Murata, of Tokyo.

Lifeguards found Murata unconscious in the water off the Royal Hawaiian Hotel at about 2 p.m. He was brought ashore, given CPR and taken to Straub Clinic & Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Cause of death was listed as asphyxia due to drowning and manner as accidental.
