Hamakua bridge to close 1 day for repairs

Advertiser Staff

Oka Bridge in the Hamakua area of the Big Island will be closed June 20 for repairs

The staff of the Hawaii County Highway and Building divisions of Public Works will close the bridge to replace wooden planks.

The bridge is located along the Hamakua Coast below Highway 19, and near mile marker 40.

Wood planks will be replaced on the bridge between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. No vehicles will be allowed to use the bridge during this time.

The County is asking residents who use Oka Bridge, which is their only way to and from

their homes, to please adjust their schedules for June 20.

The County of Hawai'i maintains 127 bridges, which are registered under the National

Bridge Inventory, administered by the Federal Highway Administration. Of the 127

bridges, 28 are wooden and serve the communities of Puna, Hilo, Kohala, Kona,

Hamakua and Ka'u.

For an update about this repair work, or if the work is canceled at the last minute

because of rain, call the county hot line at 808-334-9559.
