Mayor Bryan Baptiste of Kaua'i is recovering well after undergoing heart bypass surgery, a Kaua'i County spokeswoman reported today.

The surgery took place Friday in Honolulu. It was scheduled after routine medical testing last Monday, said Mary Daubert, county public information officer.

Baptiste will be released from the hospital soon, Daubert said in a news release, and he will be back on Kaua'i this week.

Gary Heu, the mayor's administrative assistant and chief of staff, is serving as acting mayor during the mayor's recovery.
