Hawaii Reps. Hirono, Abercrombie disclose income, assets

WASHINGTON — In addition to her congressional salary, Rep. Mazie Hirono and her husband reported income last year of $45,100 to $139,100 in dividends, interest and rent, according to reports released today.

Democrat Hirono, a former Hawai`i lieutenant governor and state House member, also reported receiving a state employee's pension of $52,082 last year.

Rep. Neil Abercrombie, a Hawai`i Democrat, reported his less than $200 in unearned income was interest on his University of Hawai`i Credit Union account.

Both Hirono and Abercrombie earned an annual congressional salary last year of $165,200.

Members of Congress are required to file annual financial disclosure statements. These reports offer a broad look at lawmakers' finances. They report assets, income and debts in wide ranges and can exclude the value of primary residences, furniture and other items.

Members of Congress also are required to report trips paid for by others, and any boards or foundations they may serve on.

Here are the highlights of their reports.

Rep. Mazie Hirono:

Earned income: $165,200 congressional salary.

Honoraria, all donated to charity: None.

Major assets: Honolulu rental property, $250,000-$500,000. Capital Income Builder fund, $100,000-$250,000, Capital World Growth fund, $50,000-$100,000. Income Fund of America, $50,000-$100,000. Investment Company of America, $50,000-$100,000. Hawai`i State Federal Credit Union, $50,000-$100,000.

Major sources of unearned income: Honolulu rental property, $5,000-$15,000. Dividends, $39,200-$106,200.

Major liabilities: Mortgage on Honolulu rental property, $50,000-$100,000.

Gifts: None.

Other information: Hirono also received a Hawai`i state employee pension of $52,082. She is a trustee of the Blood Bank of Hawai`i and a member of the board of visitors for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. Her husband, Leighton Oshima, has Morgan Stanley investments of $167,000-$555,000, and T. Rowe Price 401(k) investments of $117,000-$280,000.

Rep. Neil Abercrombie:

Earned income: $165,200.

Honoraria, all donated to charity: None.

Major assets: University of Hawai`i Credit Union, $1,000-$15,000.

Major sources of unearned income: Interest, $1-$200.

Major liabilities: None.

Gifts: None.

Other information: Abercrombie took four trips last year where special interest groups picked up the cost:

  • A one-day trip in March to Las Vegas to speak to the Maritime Trades Department of the AFL-CIO.

  • A one-day trip in May to Jacksonville, Fla., to speak to the International Chain Salon Association.

  • A one-day trip in July to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to speak to the International Longshoremen's Association.

  • A two-day trip in August to California's Napa Valley to speak to the American Sugar Alliance.
