Bacalso captures pro surf meet

Advertiser Staff

Mililani's Kekoa Bacalso defeated Kaua'i's Dustin Barca in the final of the 6-Star PRIME SriLankan Airlines Pro surf meet Saturday at Pasta Point, Maldives.

Bacalso beat Barca, 17.87-13.67, in 4- to 6-foot surf in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series event.

"(I'm) so stoked to finally win at ASP WQS level," said Bacalso, who won $15,000. "After winning the ASP World Junior title a few years ago, the pressure's been on me to perform at WQS level but it's been really hard. The competition is so tough and to finally break through is such a relief. The waves have been amazing here and the Hawaiians have ripped every day."

Other Hawai'i surfers to reach the quarterfinals along with Bacalso and Barca were Joel Centeio of Makakilo, Makuakai Rothman of O'ahu's North Shore and Dustin Cuizon of 'Ewa Beach. Centeio lost to Bacalso in the semifinals to finish in a tie for third. Bacalso ousted Rothman and Centeio eliminated Cuizon in the quarterfinals.

"It's been an amazing event for the Hawaiians," said Barca, who won $7,400. "In the final, we just surfed together out there and had a great time in perfect waves. I made a few mistakes mid-heat, but overall, wow, what a great event this has been."
