ALA MOANA
International Surfing Day cleanup set for Saturday

Surfers, swimmers, paddlers and others will gather at Magic Island on Saturday to join thousands of ocean enthusiasts around the world for the International Surfing Day cleanup.

At Magic Island, volunteers will be picking up trash on the sand and in the water, but they'll also be treated to prizes, free refreshments and some good fellowship. Scott Werny, co-chairman of the O'ahu chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, said the event is meant to raise awareness about the state of the world's oceans and what people can do to help.

"The more people who are out there cleaning, the better," he said.

The event starts at 9 a.m., and is open to the public.
