Kaua'i Mayor Bryan Baptiste is recovering well after undergoing heart bypass surgery, a Kaua'i County spokeswoman said yesterday.

Doctors performed surgery Friday in Honolulu. It was scheduled after routine medical testing June 9, said Mary Daubert, Kaua'i public information officer.

Baptiste will be released from the hospital soon, Daubert said in a news release, and he will be back on Kaua'i this week.

Gary Heu, the mayor's administrative assistant and chief of staff, is serving as acting mayor during the mayor's recovery.

Baptiste, 52, has been Kaua'i mayor since 2002.
