Pauline Wilson to join jazz quartet in benefit

Pauline Wilson, still noted for her longtime featured spot as lead singer for the group Seawind, will join the Honolulu Jazz Quartet in a fundraising concert at 7:30 p.m. July 26 at the Doris Duke Theatre at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Wilson perhaps is the first Grammy-winning singer from the Islands; in the 1980 season, she performed on "In Harmony: A Sesame Street Record," which won the Grammy for Best Recording for Children; the other performers were the Doobie Brothers, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Bette Midler, Muppets, Al Jarreau, Linda Ronstadt, Wendy Waldman, Libby Titus and Dr. John, Livingston Taylor, George Benson and Pauline Wilson, Lucy Simon, Kate Taylor and the Simon/Taylor Family.

Wilson, Big Island-born and raised, has logged a luminous career, as a soloist and as Seawind's pristine vocalist — even in the predecessor group, Ox.

The HJQ, led by bassist John Kolivas, is presenting the concert to help defray travel expenses for a concert in Sonoma, Calif. in August.

The quartet also features Tim Tsukiyama (saxophone) and Adam "Von" Baron (drums) but will showcase guest musicians Delano Choy Jr. (trumpet), Jimmy Funai (guitarist) and Jeannette Trevias (piano and vocals).

Tickets: $30 general, $25 academy members, seniors and students, available after June 26 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, or call Kolivas at 383-3909.
