Australian weightlifter banned for doping

Associate Press

SYDNEY, Australia — Weightlifter Belinda Van Tienan was banned two years for doping, the ninth Australian lifter to be penalized since 2006.

The Australian Sports Anti Doping Agency said Thursday that Van Tienan used the stimulant benzylpiperazine while competing at the 2005 Mermet Cup in the United States.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport this week upheld an Australian Weightlifting Federation sanction, banning her for the maximum two years. The suspension is backdated to when Van Tienen last competed, making her eligible to return on Nov. 27.

ASADA chairman Richard Ings said Van Tienen was the eighth Australian lifter to receive the maximum two-year sanction for doping since 2006. A ninth Australian, Sergo Chakhoyan, was banned for life in 2007 for a second doping offense.
