BALDWIN HIGH SCHOOL

Where: 1650 Ka'ahumanu Ave., Wailuku, Maui District

Grade span: Nine through 12

Enrollment: 1,602 students

Race/ethnicity enrollment: Part-Hawaiian, 25 percent; Filipino, 24 percent; other, 51 percent.

Free and reduced-price lunch eligible: 20 percent

Special-education students: 13 percent

Computers on campus: Two computer labs; four classrooms with computers for business and math classes; a third computer lab is under construction this summer.

What are you most proud of? "The variety of opportunities that we have available for our students through programs such as drama, art, band, Delta Epsilon Chi, JROTC, Workplace Readiness (SPED), Academies, Robotics, URSA Freshman Learning Teams and our well-known athletic program," Gonsalves said.

What is your biggest challenge? "Like many schools throughout the country, our biggest challenge is meeting the requirements for No Child Left Behind," Gonsalves said.

Special events: JROTC Triathlon, theater productions and band concerts throughout the year, National Honor Society Quiz Bowl, homecoming, Holiday Cafe

History: The school was named after Henry Perrine Baldwin, a businessman who started a sugar plantation on Maui. The school opened with an enrollment of 71. Its first class graduated in 1939.
