TANTALUS
Scenic lookout closing for painting, upkeep

The state will close the Pu'u 'Ualaka'a State Wayside lookout near Tantalus tomorrow and Saturday for maintenance.

Boy Scouts from Noelani Elementary School will paint lookout railings and pavilion sections and restripe the parking lot.

The park will remain open during the work. The lookout will reopen at 7 a.m. Sunday.

"We very much appreciate the help of Boy Scout Troop 35," said Laura H. Thielen, state Department of Land and Natural Resources chairwoman, in a news release. "It is one example of many needed maintenance tasks that community volunteer groups help make possible."

The lookout provides a sweeping view from Diamond Head to Pearl Harbor. The park has restrooms, picnic shelters and the trailhead for the one-mile 'Ualaka'a Loop Trail. In the summer, the park is open from 7 a.m. to 7:45 p.m.
