Honolulu boxer advances

Honolulu's Faleauto Manutulila defeated Joshua Yellow Owl, of Great Falls, Mont., yesterday in the quarterfinals of the Junior Olympic National Championships at Marquette, Mich.

Manutulila clinched a spot in today's 176-pound semifinal when the referee stopped the bout 57 seconds into the first round.

Four other Hawai'i boxers lost in the quarterfinals yesterday.

Pedro Sosa, of Bronx, N.Y., beat Hawai'i's Keano Sabado when the referee stopped the bout 1:10 into the first round; Edwin Sandoval, of Bakersfield, Calif., decisioned Wai'anae's Joshua McShane (score not available); Luis Cortez, of Las Vegas, decisioned Honolulu's Emmit Bolibol, 18-4; and Corey Walker, of St. Peters, Mo., decisioned Maui's Joshua Nakagawa, 20-3.

The tournament features more than 200 of the nation's top male and female boxers.


BASKETBALL

NCAA TIPS OFF SATURDAY

The NCAA Summer Basketball League season starts Saturday night with two games at Manoa Recreation Center.

The league will have six teams for its 32nd season: Central Medical Clinic, Electricians Hawaii, Grantco Pacific, National Fire Protection Company, PRstore and Tuskers.

The league will feature current and former college players, and high school standouts.

Games will be held every Tuesday and Saturday at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Grantco Pacific will play Central Medical Clinic at 6 p.m., and Tuskers meets PRstore at 7:30 on Saturday.

The semifinals will be Aug. 12, and the final Aug. 16 at 7 p.m.

There is no admission charge for the games.
