Mayor Mufi Hannemann and former Chaminade University coach Merv Lopes have teamed up to form the inaugural "In the Paint Skills Camp" for boys and girls next month at Manoa Valley District Park Gym.

The weekly camp — focusing on post skills — will be open to middle school students grades five to eight and high school students, and also features a coaches clinic.

"As the excellent quality of high school play demonstrates, our local student-athletes have excellent ball-handling skills thanks to the many youth programs in our community," Hannemann said. "However, Merv Lopes and I believe there's a need to broaden the skills of our youth, particularly for the 'big man' types like post players, centers and wingmen."

In addition to Hannemann and Lopes, camp coaches will include University of Hawai'i men's coach Bob Nash, Hawai'i Pacific men's coach Tony Sellitto, Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's coach Wendy Anae, BYUH men's assistant Brandyn Akana, Kamehameha-Hawai'i boys coach Nelson Wong, Punahou boys coach Dan Hale, former Chaminade standout Tony Randolph, plus former high school coaches Kaipo Spencer, Sol Batoon and Rodney Veary.

The high school session will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on July 11, July 18 and July 25. The middle school session will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on July 12 and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on July 19 and July 26.

The coaches clinic will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. on July 11, July 18 and July 25, and coaches will be asked to stay afterward to help with the youth clinic.

"Like Pete Newell's Big Man Camp, which many NBA players have attended, we'll focus on the specific instruction that post players need to be effective," Hannemann said.

Participation will be limited to the first 100 to register by the June 27 deadline. The $30 fee for students includes a shirt, shorts and basketball.

The $40 fee for coaches includes a shirt and Baden notebook.

For more information or to obtain a registration form, call Dana Takahara-Dias at 258-9991. The camp is co-sponsored by adidas, Baden Sports, Pagoda Hotel and the City and County of Honolulu.
