Hawaii Kai's Santos wins handboard title

 •  Fun in Hawaii sun calls for proper hydration

Kai Santos of Hawai'i Kai won the grand championship of the 10th annual Redwings Memorial World Championships of Handboarding last weekend.

The two-day contest was run in 2- to 4-foot waves at Point Panic.

Santos was the top performer of the weekend, winning three divisions: pro, senior men (ages 31 to 40) and the grand championship.

The top two finishers in each age division advanced to the grand championship heat.

In the grand final, Santos scored 57 points to top James Duca's score of 51. Alex Kamalu placed third, and Blaise Seto-Mook was fourth.

Santos also won the grand championship last year and in 2005.

Around 75 competitors participated in the contest.

Jarrett Liu of Palolo won the paepo board division.

FREE BODYBOARDING CONTEST TOMORROW

The first Keiki Oceanfest Bodyboarding Contest will be held tomorrow at Waimanalo Bay Beach Park.

Former world champion bodyboarder Jeff Hubbard is running the contest, and entry is free for boys and girls ages 4 to 15.

"It's just one day to get kids off the streets and show them how fun bodyboarding and being in the ocean can be," Hubbard said.

He said there will also be a division for newcomers, and competitors who do not own equipment can borrow bodyboards and swim fins.

Professional bodyboarders and lifeguards will also be conducting free instructional clinics during the event. Event organizers are asking participants to bring a canned good for donation to the Hawai'i Food Bank.

PADDLEBOARD RACE SET FOR NORTH SHORE

The 30th annual Hui O He'e Nalu Independence Day Paddleboard Race will run July 4.

The 3 1/2-mile course will start at Sunset Beach and finish at Waimea Bay.

There will be divisions for stock boards and unlimited boards in age divisions ranging from 13-younger to 60-older.

Entry fee is $30 (or $40 for tandem entries). For information, visit www.dahui.com.

The 2nd annual Waimea Bay Lifeguards Keiki Ocean Challenge will be held at Waimea Bay in conjunction with the paddleboard race. Age divisions range from 5 to 12, and entry is free.
