Honolulu's Alex Ching defeated Kaua'i's Jonathan Ota, in dominating fashion, 8 and 7, today to capture the match-play final of the 100th Manoa Cup at Oahu Country Club.

Ching, who shot 67 after the first 18 holes, took a 5-up lead on Ota and never looked back in the match scheduled for 36 holes.

Ching, a recent Punahou graduate, won seven consecutive holes between Nos. 5 and 11 to built a 7-up lead. After Ota won the 12th, Ching won the 13th hole before Ota came back by winning the 15th and 17th holes to cut it to 5 up.

He went back to 7-up winning the 19th and 20th holes. After Ota won the 21st hole, Ching won the 22nd, 23rd and 25th holes to go 9 up. They halved the next two holes to go dormie with nine holes remaining. Ota won the 28th hole to cut Ching's lead to 8 up, but the golfers halved the 29th hole giving Ching the victory.

Ching, 18, was the No. 2 seed in the tournament, the state amateur match-play championship. Ota, 46, was the 29th seed, who won the tournament in 2006.
