ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Morgan Pressel, intensifying her practice routines as she moves beyond her teens, shot a 7-under 65-par yesterday to take a one-stroke lead over Suzann Pettersen midway through the Wegmans LPGA.

"You always have to be working ... harder because otherwise you are going to be passed pretty quickly out here," Pressel, the youngest major winner in LPGA Tour history, said after a second bogey-free round broke open a leaderboard logjam and got her to 10-under 134.

Punahou alum and Stanford freshman Michelle Wie, who is ranked 200th in the world and got in the tournament on a sponsor's exemption, matched her opening-round 71 to get to 2 under.

Defending champion Lorena Ochoa shot 70 to drop into a tie for 17th at 2 under. Annika Sorenstam (72), who is stepping away from the tour at the end of the season, finished her second round at 1 over and narrowly avoided being cut out of weekend play for the first time in 40 events dating to May 2006.

Pettersen, a five-time tour winner last year, chipped in for birdie on No. 9 — her last hole — to match Pressel's 65 and get to 9 under.

"I'm making a few adjustments right now to give myself ... a bit more consistency," the Norwegian star said. "I've been working hard on my game and not trying to get too hard on myself."

Inbee Park, who tied for fourth at the U.S. Women's Open in her rookie year in 2007, finished with a bogey to drop into third place at 8 under alongside Japan's Ai Miyazato (68). Both had been lodged in a seven-way tie for the lead after Thursday's opening round.

Pressel, 20, had to battle early on to tame the tricky, tree-lined Locust Hill course, sinking 10-foot and 18-foot putts on Nos. 3 and 4 to save par. She ran up five of her six birdies on the back nine.

Since her breakthrough at the Kraft Nabisco Championship at age 18 in April 2007, Pressel, Kapalua Resort's touring professional, has nine top-10 finishes. Her form dipped this spring — she missed four cuts — as she struggled to add distance off the tee and improve her short game. But she tied for second at the Sybase Classic in May and tied for sixth two weeks ago at the LPGA Championship.

PGA TOUR

Stewart Cink moved to the top of the Travelers Championship leaderboard yesterday, making two long eagle putts in a 6-under 64 that left him a stroke ahead of defending champion Hunter Mahan and two others at Cromwell, Conn.

Cink, the 1997 winner at TPC River Highlands, is seeking his first victory of the season after six top-10 finishes.

"I hope it's just a matter of time," said Cink, who opened with a 66 on Thursday en route to a 10-under 130 total. "I hope it's a matter of about two days."

It didn't look good early for Cink, who began the day at 4 under and promptly bogeyed the first two holes. He got one back with a birdie at the third before knocking in a 26-foot putt for eagle on the par-5 sixth. He bettered that shot by curling in a 49-foot right-to-left eagle putt on the 13th.

Mahan shot a 63 to join Ken Duke and Lucas Glover at 9-under. Duke and Glover shot 66s.

CHAMPIONS TOUR

Tom Kite matched the course record with a 9-under 63 to take the first-round lead in the Bank of America Championship at Concord, Mass.

The 57-year-old Kite birdied the first three holes at Nashawtuc Country Club and played the front nine in 6-under 30. Two strokes ahead of Mark McNulty and David Eger, Kite matched Allen Doyle's tournament record set in 2003.

EUROPE TOUR

Germany's Martin Kaymer shot a 9-under 63 to take a five-stroke lead after the second round of the BMW International Open at Munich, Germany

The 23-year-old Kaymer had a 13-under 131 total. France's Francois Delamontagne (66) and England's Benn Barham (68) were tied for second. John Daly missed the cut by a stroke with his second straight 72.
