Salutes

  • Twelve public high school students from across O'ahu will be awarded scholarships worth up to $4,000 each by Hawaii Self Storage. The funds will go toward a degree at the college or university of their choice. Each will receive annually renewable $1,000 awards for a maximum of two years for associate degrees and four years for bachelor's degrees.

  • The Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation honors distinguished public school graduates and a corporate honoree each year.

    The 2008 honorees are: Veronica Kaneko, president and managing director of McDonald's Restaurants of Hawaii and the first Pearl City High graduate to be recognized; Larry Price, co-host of the "Perry and Price Morning Show" on KSSK radio and a Roosevelt High graduate; Stanley Seki, a retired deputy superintendent for the state Department of Education and McKinley High graduate; and Meadow Gold Dairies Hawaii, the state's oldest and largest dairy.

    The foundation is dedicated to strengthening the quality of public education by creating opportunities for innovative school-level ideas.

  • Jared Maeda of Wailuku, Maui, recently was selected by the U.S. Department of State to spend two months over the summer in Suwon, South Korea, as part of an intensive Korean language institute hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. Maeda is a doctoral candidate at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health in the Division of Health Policy and Administration.

  • Top team winners of this year's annual Willie K Charity Golf Tournament were Maui Diagnostic Imaging players Scott Halliday, Bair Bush, Johnny Mullally and Brad Ing.

    To date the tournament has raised more than $100,000 for the Oncology Department at Maui Memorial Medical Center. These funds have been used to purchase equipment for cancer patients and to assist patients in severe financial need with such items as interisland travel to receive necessary treatments, grocery store coupons for food and supplies, and rent and utility assistance.

  • What started as a Girl Scout project has earned 17-year-old Kristen Uyeoka of 'Aiea the top spot in the teen category for American Humane Association's Be Kind to Animals Kid Contest.

    Uyeoka created interactive lesson plans that teach children the importance of responsible pet ownership and compassion for all animals.
