Tennessee's Candace Parker wins college athlete of year award

Associated Press

NEW YORK — Candace Parker of Tennessee has won the Honda-Broderick Cup, given to the nation's top female college athlete.

Parker led the Lady Vols to their second consecutive NCAA title in April. She was the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft by the Los Angeles Sparks.

Parker received the award at Columbia University. Minnesota-Duluth volleyball player Vicky Braegelmann and Willamette cross-country star Sarah Zerzan were selected as athletes of the year in Division II and III.

The Women's Sports Foundation was honored on the 36th anniversary of Title IX, which bans discrimination in education and sports.
