'EWA BEACH
Fort Weaver widening south-bound continues

Lane closures on Fort Weaver Road in the southbound direction between 'A'awa Drive and Geiger Road will continue from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily this week.

The closures will allow for drainage installations and road surfacing.

Work on the northbound lanes has been suspended indefinitely until engineers can figure out a way to deal with heavy traffic flow.

Phase II of the project calls for widening Fort Weaver between 'A'awa and Geiger from four lanes to six and is expected to be completed in mid-2009. Cost is $59.85 million, 80 percent of which is paid for with federal funds, 20 percent with state funds.

Phase I, from 'A'awa to Farrington Highway, was completed in August 2006. A later, third phase will extend south beyond Geiger.

Motorists are advised to use caution while driving through the work area and to allow for extra travel time. Roadwork will be done as weather permits.
