STATEWIDE FATALITY BREAKDOWN

As of today, 54 people have died in traffic accidents this year in Hawai‘i as compared to 67 by this date in 2007.

  • O‘AHU (24) — Vehicle (11 deaths/10 crashes; pending one medical), pedestrian (7), motorcycle (4), moped (1), bicycle (1).

  • BIG ISLAND (12) — Vehicle (9), motorcycle (2), pedestrian (1).

A 54-year-old Mililani man killed today in a collision on the H-1 Freeway in Waiawa is O'ahu's seventh traffic fatality of the month and its 11th in a 42-day period dating back to May 15.

The 2008 island's fatality stands at 24 compared to 36 on the same date in 2007.

Today's collision occurred in eastbound on the H-1 Freeway, 400 feet east of the Farrington Highway overpass at 10:26 a.m. and involved a 2002 Saturn sedan and 2003 Toyota Matrix, according to police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Michael Brede.

The driver of the Matrix was pronounced dead at the scene. The Saturn's three occupants — a 19-year-old Waipahu man, who was driving, a woman, 19, and 9-month-old infant boy — escaped injury.

Investigators determined that when Saturn executed a lane change from the second to left-most lane, it struck the Matrix which was already in the lane and caused it to collide with a light pole and flip over against a concrete barrier.

Speed and/or alcohol do not appear to be factors, Brede said.
