CHINATOWN
City receives award for Chinatown revitalization

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann accepted a City Livability Award for Outstanding Achievement for the city's effort to revitalize and preserve Honolulu's Chinatown.

The award was presented to Hannemann on June 21 at the U.S. Conference of Mayors' annual meeting in Miami.

Chinatown was designated as an "Art Enterprise Zone" in 1997, which led to the formation of the ARTS at Marks Garage, according to a city press release.

ARTS later launched the "First Fridays Gallery Walk," an event that attracts up to 10,000 people to Chinatown in one night.

Other initiatives to improve Chinatown include the first-ever Chinatown Economic Summit in June 2006 and the "Month in Chinatown" celebration of Chinese New Year.
