Few box jellyfish washing up on shore — so far

Advertiser Staff

The monthly influx of box jellyfish into near-shore waters on Oahu began today, but so far, very few of the tiny creatures that carry a potentially deadly sting have shown up, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.

As of earlier this morning, only two of the marine jellies had been found, both of them along Waikiki Beach, Cheplic said.

None had been discovered yet along any of the other city beaches on Oahu, Cheplic said.

"Tomorrow is supposed to be the peak," Cheplic said.

He advised people planning to go to any of the beaches staffed by lifeguards to check with them first before entering the water.

Further information on marine jellies and how to treat stings is available at websites www.808jellyfish or www.hawiibeachsafety.org.
