Mililani dentist charged with prescription abuse

By Rod Ohira

A Mililani dentist charged with pain-killer prescription abuse will be arraigned Monday.

Dr. Jay A. Cambra was booked today on 11 counts of prohibited acts related to control substances and one count of third-degree promoting of a detrimental drug at the sheriff's receiving desk at the Halawa Correctional Facility at 8:15 a.m., said state Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy.

Cambra was released after posting $11,000 bail.

The state Narcotics Enforcement Division has been investigating Cambra since 2006.

On Dec. 14, 2006, NED personnel did a search-warrant raid at Cambra's Mililani Towne Center office at 95-1249 Meheula Parkway. Investigators seized over 40 vials with labels identifying Cambra as the prescribing doctor for different patients, McCoy said. All but one of the vials seized were labeled for a controlled substance, McCoy added.

Investigators also seized a small amount of marijuana in the raid, which led to the detrimental drug charge.

Investigators raided Cambra's office again in March 2007 on a search warrant for records.

The case involves the alleged writing fake prescriptions for patients. Cambra's case came to NED's attention when a patient complained about a billing for prescriptions not ordered.

In December 2006, NED investigated another dentist, Dr. Declan Devereux, for similar prescription abuses which led to charges.
