Slack-key celebrity Makana puts on the Makana Birthday Bash from 5 to 11:30 tonight at RumFire in the Sheraton Waikiki. The free event launches I Ho'ili Kamali'i, a project started by Makana to restore music programs and acquire instruments for students in local schools.

Makana and Friends perform from 5 to 8 p.m., followed by DJ Mr. Nick from 8:30 to 11:30 p.m. A raffle drawing for a variety of prizes will benefit the I Ho'ili Kamali'i project. Information: www.makanamusic.com.

MILITARY APPRECIATION DAY ON SATURDAY INCLUDES FREE LUNCH

USO Hawai'i hosts Military Appreciation Day at the Honolulu Zoo from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. The event, free for holders of a valid military ID, will include a free picnic lunch to the first 8,000 service-connected personnel and their families.

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, who called the zoo "one of the wildest places you can go in our community" in his laudatory statement, gives it his seal of approval. Information: www.honoluluzoo.org, 971-7171.
