Firefighters reach stranded hiker in Kuliouou

Honolulu Fire Department rescue specialists reached a stranded male hiker from Colorado on the Kuliouou Trail at 10:45 last night and are planning to escort him out this morning.

The hiker, who was stranded on a ledge, is not injured, said HFD spokesman Capt. Earle Kealoha. It took the rescue specialists four hours to reach the man on foot and they are expected to bring him out early today.

Kealoha said the man began his hike at 12:15 p.m. and called for help at 3:40 p.m.

The department's helicopter could not bring the hiker out safely due to windy conditions and a larger Coast Guard helicopter called in to assist ran into the same problem, Kealoha said. So rescue specialists went in on foot at 6:45 p.m.
