POLICE BEAT
Dentist to be arraigned Monday on prescription abuse charges

A Mililani dentist charged with pain-killer prescription abuse is to be arraigned on Monday.

Dr. Jay A. Cambra was booked yesterday on 11 counts of prohibited acts related to controlled substances and one count of third-degree promoting of a detrimental drug, said state Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy.

Cambra was released after posting $11,000 bail.

The state Narcotics Enforcement Division had been investigating Cambra since 2006.

On Dec. 14, 2006, division personnel raided Cambra's Mililani Towne Center office at 95-1249 Meheula Parkway.

Investigators seized over 40 vials with labels identifying Cambra as the prescribing doctor for various patients, McCoy said. All but one of the vials were labeled for a controlled substance, McCoy added.

Investigators also seized a small amount of marijuana in the raid, which led to the detrimental-drug charge.

Investigators raided Cambra's office again in March 2007, seeking records.

The dentist is suspected of writing fake prescriptions for patients. Cambra's case came to authorities' attention when a patient complained about a billing for prescriptions not ordered.
