MIAMI — Matt Garza couldn't sleep yesterday morning. Phone calls and text messages kept coming in from his former Fresno State teammates, who had just won the College World Series.

The calls from back home kept waking him up, and he only got a couple hours sleep before his noon start.

Now he'll be calling them.

Garza pitched a one-hitter, allowing only Hanley Ramirez's home run leading off the seventh inning, and the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Florida Marlins, 6-1, yesterday to complete a three-game sweep.

"I was trying to top them," Garza said. "Almost."

Garza (6-4) struck out 10 and walked one in his first complete game in 38 major league starts. He faced the minimum 18 batters through six innings on a humid afternoon in Miami, where weekday day games are unusual.

"The heat was coming from that 94, 95 mph he was throwing with movement," Florida's Luis Gonzalez said. "He was pinpointing his pitches; throwing in, out, up, down, everything."

Ramirez's line-drive homer was the only hard-hit ball for Florida, which broke bats and popped up bloopers against the fast-working Garza. The pitch, a slider off the plate, was a ball most hitters wouldn't swing at, Garza said.

Evan Longoria homered and had three hits for the Devil Rays, who swept their Sunshine State rival for just the second time.

ATHLETICS 5, PHILLIES 0

Rich Harden (5-0) struck out a career-high 11, allowing two hits in eight innings, both by St. Anthony alum Shane Victorino, and Alan Embree completed the three-hitter to lead host Oakland over Philadelphia.

TIGERS 3, CARDINALS 2

Clete Thomas drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Detroit over St. Louis, spoiling the return of Albert Pujols (15-day DL with calf injury), who hit an RBI single in the ninth for a 2-1 lead.

ORIOLES 11, CUBS 4

Aubrey Huff had four hits and two RBIs, Jay Payton drove in three runs and Baltimore roughed up Chicago and Jason Marquis (6-4), who gave up seven runs and seven hits in four innings, to become the second team to win a series at Wrigley Field this season.

WHITE SOX 2, DODGERS 0

John Danks (5-4) spaced four hits over six innings and combined with four relievers for a five-hitter, and Alexei Ramirez and Carlos Quentin had RBI singles to lead visiting Chicago over Los Angeles.

TWINS 4, PADRES 3

Justin Morneau went 3 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs, helping host Minnesota beat San Diego to extend its winning streak to nine, all against the NL after sweeping the Washington Nationals and Arizona Diamondbacks.

BLUE JAYS 7, REDS 1

Scott Rolen hit a two-run homer off Edinson Volquez (10-3), who entered with a major league-best 1.71 ERA but was tagged for seven runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings, and Jesse Litsch (8-4) gave up a run on three hits in eight innings to lead host Toronto.

ASTROS 7, RANGERS 2

Wandy Rodriguez (3-3) allowed a run on five hits over eight innings with nine strikeouts, and Hunter Pence had a three-run triple as host Houston beat Texas to take a 2-1 series win over its state rival.

INDIANS 4, GIANTS 1

Cliff Lee (11-1) allowed a run and four hits over 11 innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts, and Jamey Carroll and Jhonny Peralta drove in two runs apiece to help host Cleveland avoid a three-game sweep by San Francisco.

NOTES

ASTROS WAIVE CHACON

Shawn Chacon was put on waivers yesterday by the Houston Astros, a day after he got into a physical altercation with general manager Ed Wade.

If another team doesn't claim Chacon by Monday, the Astros say they will release the pitcher and terminate his contract for cause, which would set off a confrontation with the players' association over the nearly $1 million that would remain on Chacon's deal.

"Based on the information we have to date, we believe the Astros' response violates the Basic Agreement," union general counsel Michael Weiner said. "If Shawn Chacon clears waivers and is released, we will pursue appropriate relief on his behalf."

Houston says Chacon violated a provision in the uniform player contract that states the player may be terminated if he shall "fail, refuse, or neglect to conform his personal conduct to the standards of good citizenship and good sportsmanship or to keep himself in first-class physical condition or to obey to the club's training rules."

Chacon's agent, Dan Horwits, said he would wait to see if his client clears waivers before he addresses whether a grievance would be filed.
