Fake 'handgun' doesn't work in Waikiki robbery try

Advertiser Staff

A masked man who tried to rob a Waikiki store by pointing his finger at a cashier and pretending it was a gun was arrested yesterday afternoon on robbery and drug counts.

Police said the man entered a store on Kuhio Avenue at about 3:30 p.m. with a bandanna over his face. The robber "made a gun with his hand, pointing it at the cashier and demanding money," a police report said.

The cashier thought the man was "playing around" until he pushed her hand away from the cash register and tried to open it.

The cashier yelled, the man fled, a passer-by flagged down a police officer and the man was arrested, police said.

Police said they found drugs in his possession.
